I love my new camera! I haven't finished reading the user manual because it has so many features. I went to Universal Orlando and everyone was impressed with not only how easy it was to use the camera but how beautiful the colors were. The zoom feature is great. The best part is how large the screen is. It is so slim and I love the stylus that comes with the camera so you can see your pics. The only problem I had was that I didn't purchase a memory card so after 4 pics, I had no memory left and had to purchase a memory card at the park (ouch at the price!!) I would highly recommend this camera to everyone who is looking for an affordable yet high quality, beautiful pics!!

Excellent Camera : Nikon COOLPIX S9100 12.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera with 18x NIKKOR ED Wide-Angle Optical Zoom Lens and Full HD 1080p Video (Black)

The specs for the S9100 looked promising but it produced fuzzy and often out of focus still pictures making it unacceptable. In the end, I found the Nikon S8100 to have superior picture quality.

I started by taking 50 or so pictures in a variety of setting using the S9100's default settings. The results looked ok on the camera's 3" screen but once loaded to my PC, poor focusing & fuzzy/soft edges were evident in almost every photo. I wasn't ready to give up on the S9100 so I spent the next couple of days reading the manual and even buying my second choice (Nikon's S8100) for a direct comparison. I am upgrading from a Sony DSC-P200 (3x zoom, 7.2 MP) which produces good pictures but has a small field of view, only a 3X zoom and only does so so in low light. So my final comparison was between all 3 cameras.

After reading the S9100's manual I adjusted some of the default settings in the hope it would improve the photo quality:
* Auto Focus (AF) mode: I selected Center mode instead of the default. This tells the camera to focus on the center of the screen instead of the default. The default attempts to guess at what you want to focus on which in my experience was the closest object.
* ISO Setting: I changed the default to limit the ISO range to 400 max (Suggested in some other/similar Nikon camera reviews).
* Auto vs. Scene modes: For indoor photos I selected the indoor scene mode.

Of the 3 changes to the default setting above, only the AF Center change seemed to impact my test photos. I was able to tell the camera what object I wanted to focus on but even then focus was hit or miss.

With the S9100 settings tweaked I again took the same 50 or so photos I took earlier using the factory default setting and compared them to the same shots taken with the Nikon S8100 and Sony DSC-P200. The results:
Even when the S9100 appeared to focus on the proper object the photos were still fuzzy/soft when views on my pc. The more I zoomed in on the photos on my PC the more I could see the flaws. When I viewed the same photos taken on the Nikon S8100 and Sony DSC-P200 for the most part they were superior/crisper than the S9100 though the Sony could not zoom in nearly as close as the S9100 or S8100. The test photos were not particularly challenging... Indoors with lights on and Outdoors in midday daylight - With/without flash, wide/ zoomed, Auto/ indoor scene modes and focusing on various objects only some of which should challenge the AF. If the S9100 can't handle these basic shots there's no point testing more challenging tasks like low light, fast action or HD video.

Conclusion: The S8100 has superior (But by no means prefect) picture quality in these basic everyday situations and has the zoom upgrade I was looking for, it's a keeper. The S9100's poor picture quality is a show stopper, it's going back.

Considering the specs how could this be? I'm no expert but one possible cause is the image stabilization process... The S8100 uses Lens shift and S9100 uses Senor shift. Of course perhaps I happened to get a defective camera.

For those of you who are wonder what I mean by Fuzzy/Soft. A picture of a couch with patterns in the pillows... the edge of the pillow with a wall in behind it looked fuzzy and the pattern on the pillow looking as if the lines in the patterns were blended/feathered with the S9100 but sharper/crisper with the S8100. Pictures that involved text, whether it be a birthday card on a hutch or the lighting instructions on my grill, were clear and easily read in the s8100 photos but blurred/fuzzy to the point where I could only guess what the words were with the S9100.

A solid performer with some minor quirks : Nikon COOLPIX L120 14.1 MP Digital Camera with 21x NIKKOR Wide-Angle Optical Zoom Lens and 3-Inch LCD (Black)

I recieved this camera just a couple of days ago. Wow what a fantastic surprise! My two previous digital cameras were a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ10 which I purchased in 2009 for a bicycle tour. While the camera had a lot of good things going for it a couple of problems stuck out which I could not tolerate. 1st and foremost it was very poor in bad lighting and the flash did not compinsate. 2nd..it really needed to be held steady any movement created a blurry picture. Declining light only made the issue worse. My other digital is a Nikon Coolpix 4300 which I bought 6 or 7 years ago to handle an online website. I love that camera, great pictures. good in bad light, not much zoom capability but could deal with that. The big problem...It was designed with an odd memory card which is hard to get and did not hold as much as comparable cameras today. I still use this camera for my website.

Good luck with Nikon and poor luck with Lumix I decided to chance another Nikon. Wow again..quick focus, Holds a common SD card, great zoom capabilities, and best of all it opperates very well in poor light conditions, in fact I forced a poor light condition under my desk with no flash and worked beyond belief! Add to those good reviews the fact they have redesigned the zoom key and placed it on the left side on the lens (can you say 35mm like)long, long, long over due.

If your thinking about one...make the plunge. A+A+A+

Great small camera loaded with features!! : Nikon COOLPIX S6100 16 MP Digital Camera with 7x NIKKOR Wide-Angle Optical Zoom Lens and 3-Inch Touch-Panel LCD (Red)

I have had this camera for about 4 hours now, so I am obviously a professional here. But I am amazed at this camera. I'll try and keep it short. The camera pictures are great indoors, great outdoors, great macro, good 7x opti zoom, Good white balance, great low light. Functionally, it is a simple interface, fast start to shoot time about 2-3 seconds, no noticeable shutter lag, flash is good for very short range, poor after about 7-10 feet and tends to not illuminate the entire photo, unless subject is very close.
Unless you are well schooled in SLR cameras, this will take as close to a perfect photo within a near range of subjects. If you want to zoom in on a players nose hairs from the balcony of the stadium, this camera will not do it. If you want to photograph your kids in normal light to dusk at 1-60 feet away. I don't believe you could improve upon this camera. I have not used it in bright outdoor light yet, so no opinion there. Unless you need a stronger zoom or flash, you cannot go wrong with this camera. It is simple fast and takes near magazine quality photos.

If you want to move up from a pocket size point and shoot camera to one with a 15X zoom, this is a good choice. The photo quality equals many point and shoot cameras, and the 15X zoom and anti-shake features allow you a great deal more flexibilty. Without casting any negativity on reviewers who gave unfavorable ratings, I can only assume that they didn't set the camera on 'auto mode' which does permit you to set the flash mode, and allows some white balance compensation. You can also pick Nikon's preset camera modes, but 'auto mode' works best. Does the photo quality equal a digital slr camera? Of policy not. Are the quality of pictures equal to my Canon Sd1000 point and shoot? Yes. Is it priced like a 15X zoom digital slr? No.

The camera's viewfinder/playback screen is one of the camera's other highlights. It has a very high pixel count and is the same as one used on Nikon's higher priced digital camera. The Hd video recording approaches that of a mid priced Hd camcorder. I had No problems playing back Hd movies on any of my Hd Tvs, and I don't understand the complaints about poor photo quality, bad flash pictures, and poor Hd video. I can only assume habitancy didn't understand the directions, which aren't the best, left the camera in 'easy mode', which is how it is set out of the box, or they got defective units and naturally should have exchanged them. While this camera probably isn't exceptional in any one category, it performs very well across practically all categories and is a steal in the doing vs price segment.

Lens Cover part 2 : Nikon Coolpix P7000 10.1 MP Digital Camera with 7.1x Wide Zoom-Nikkor ED Lens and 3-Inch LCD

I purchased this camera for my wife for Christmas. In March while out on a photo shoot of wildflowers the Lens Cover stopped occasion fully. Since it was past Amazon's 30 day return window I went to Nikon's Website and set up a return to heal facility. At this point I was somewhat disappointed but comprehension of the fact sometimes things don't go completely correctly and had high expectations of Nikon making things right. I sent off to Nikon(on my dime) and after a few weeks they replied the camera would be repaired under warranty. So far so good. After about a month and a half the camera was returned. The first time we took it out it immediate exhibited the same Lens Cover not retracting issue.

Now I will have to look send to sending it back to Nikon (on my dime) and waiting a join of months for Nikon to "repair". Not what I incredible from Nikon. We have vacation planned for next month and the whole idea of purchasing this camera was to have one which took quality photos but was easier to carry around than our D40x. Now it looks like I will have to purchase an equivalent size camera from Canon or other company if we don't want to carry the D40x.....

I should have read others reviews before purchasing as I see this issue is not unique to us.

Update:
I contacted Nikon buyer keep and they sent me a pre-paid shipping label since the question was back less than six months from their "repair". I can't complain that I had to ship back "on my dime". Still unhappy the camera has been at heal facility for about 1/3 of the time I have owned it.

Update:
After a few weeks my wife called and checked on repair. Nikon stated it was shipping out the next day. After a join of weeks it hadn't showed up and she checked back. Nikon then stated the heal had not started yet. Since it was less than a week until our big trip my wife was upset and let Nikon know it. They agreed to send a New camera to replace our customary one. It arrived in time for trip and so far it works Ok. Hope the lens cover issue does not reappear. I will update if whatever else goes wrong or if all goes right (fingers crossed)

Update:
Camera performed flawlessly while vacation. Took ~ 1500 photos. However, the week after our return the *New* camera started exhibiting the same lens cover problem. So far we have had to send to Nikon twice, once for heal and once for replacement.
We plan on contacting Nikon and request for a refund.
